From Liberia Airport LIR (Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport): Is the closest major airport with direct flights coming from Canada, USA and Europe. You can either enjoy a scenic 2 to 2.5 hour drive to Nosara or take a quick 30-minute domestic flight directly to the Nosara Airstrip, we suggest booking Sansa Airlines.
From San Jose Airport SJO (Juan Santamaría International Airport): After your international flight, travelers can hop on a 45-minute domestic flight with Sansa Airlines their terminal is inside the Juan Santamaría and flight to Nosara Airstrip.
Road Trip: For the adventurous soul, driving from San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica takes approximately 3.5 to 5 hours (depending on traffic), offering a chance to explore the stunning Costa Rican countryside with magical views. Private transportation is another option available if you don’t want to drive but still want to make the roadtrip to Guiones, Nosara.
The best time to visit Playa Guiones depends on your priorities. The dry season (December to April) offers sunshine and hotter temperatures, while the rainy season (May to November) brings greener landscapes and slightly cooler weather. Crowds are typically lighter during the rainy season, making it a great choice if you’re looking for a more tranquil experience and cheaper prices for accommodations.
First things first, Playa Guiones isn’t going to scare anybody off. Even when the waves are pumping, the worst you’ll get is a quick spin-cycle courtesy of the thick lips, and maybe a little souvenir Guanacaste sand for good measure. I find that the overcast days can make it look more intimidating, but trust me, paddling out, those duck-dives are easy-peasy.
The waves themselves are totally fun. They’ve got enough speed and power to get you ripping, with the added bonus of minimal consequences if you mess up. When it’s smaller, the place is a happy mix of all kinds of surfers. Think mellow takeoffs, long walls perfect for turns, and plenty of closeouts to mess around on. Since the beach is huge, there’s enough space to spread everyone out.
If Guiones starts feeling a little too mellow after a few days (totally understandable for intermediate or advanced surfers), head south. There are a few beach breaks up there with way more hollow waves – nothing too crazy, but way more punchy than Guiones, those beaches names are: Marbella, Barrigona and Camaronal.

Barrigona Beach: This lesser-known paradise requires a bit of a drive (around 35 minutes), but the secluded white sand and pristine waters make it worth the effort. Expert surfers might find the conditions to their liking too!
San Juanillo Beach: Another beauty about 40 minutes from Guiones, this beach boasts a unique feature – ocean on both sides! Pack a picnic and spend the day soaking up the sun and incredible views.
La Mala Noche Waterfall: Nestled in the mountains, this waterfall and its refreshing pools require a local guide to help you navigate the trail. It is always recommended but some people prefer doing it by themselves.
